SCM MICROSYSTEMS OFFERS FIRST CERTIFIED SMART CARD READER FOR THE NEW ELECTRONIC ID CARD IN GERMANY
SCM Microsystems, Inc. has announced that its contactless smart card reader SCL011 is the first reader to be certified by the Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, or “BSI”) to be used with the new electronic ID card (neuer Personalausweis, or “nPA”) in Germany.

In August 2004, US President George Bush signed a presidential directive that requested a standard for secure identity documents, issued by the US federal government to federal employees and contractors. That standard, called FIPS 201, was issued in February 2005 and specifies all aspects of the Personal Identity Verification processes and credentials, as well as the requirements for the products, such as cards, readers and software that are to be used with such credentials.
